Projects

The following
four projects are scheduled to begin in 2003. They are intended to involve
students, teachers and communities.
It's in
the Air
This international multimedia study is a collaboration between the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Miami. It
will examine nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions
in rapidly growing megacities in the world, what their effects are and
what can be done to foster change. Classrooms in participating cities
will all be linked and communicate globally with each other and the communities
in which they live.
The Great
Energy Rush
This project will take a close look at the future of energy and involve
energy companies. It will encourage the study, development and implementation
of new energies, and the transition away from fossil fuels. This project
will also discuss the development of alternative and new sources of energy.
Classroom participation and virtual tours using still pictures, audio
clips and text will also be used to link to organizations and companies
that are working in this area.
Smart
Circles
This is the place where students become geographers, historians, mathematicians
and cartographers by creating multimedia Circle Tours that guide people
through various environments. Students will work in conjunction with various
libraries and museums to produce their multimedia tours. They will then
begin applying GPS navigational technologies to the stories they create
in their geographical environment. Finally, they will use various digital
multimedia formats in the creation of their final CD products. The first
series of circle tours will begin in Denver, where the EILI Network is
headquartered.
Wastebasket
Extravaganza
How valuable are the contents of your wastebasket that get tossed into
landfills? This event-based project and demonstration lab will involve
students, seniors, communities and businesses throughout the world. Participants
will learn the importance of recycling and remanufacturing for future
generations. They will even learn some important chemical and manufacturing
information about materials like plastics - a valuable resource that much
of humanity takes for granted. Events may include everything from a recycled
pop bottle fashion show -- "From Cola to Couture" to a close-up
study of new building materials from places like Eco Products, Trex and
Mohawk Carpet. Participants will also take visits to places like Dennis
Weaver's house of tires near Ridgeway, Colorado or architect Doug Eichelberger's
"house of trash" south of Castle Rock Colorado. This project
is a mix of chemistry, environmental awareness and an inventive spirit.
